One Step Solutions (Part 2 of many)
11 Jun 2008
How do you solve all of the problems in the U.S. healthcare system in One Step™? Allow non-physicians to practice medicine. Why?
- Reverse the effects of government-instituted insurance policy which continues to decrease patient access to healthcare
- Recognize that mid-level practitioners such as NPs and PAs are just as capable as doctors
- Recognize that writing prescriptions is no more complicated than looking up drugs on a PDA
- Recognize that doctors are simply too expensive; cheaper = better
- Satisfy the mid-level practitioner lobby who petitions government for this power
Why will it happen?
- It is already being done to a limited extent as dictated through CMS reimbursement policy
- Government policy makers want statistical results, both in terms of costs and in terms of population access to "healthcare"
- Patients will not know the difference that receiving healthcare from unqualified practitioners will bring until things go wrong
- When government mandates cause a surge in demand for healthcare services, the government must fill the gap somehow; the dreaded "rationing" word must be kept from public discussion at all costs
- Britain’s NHS is moving in that direction, and since that system is the pinnacle of healthcare, the U.S. should follow its lead
After all, who wouldn’t want to entrust his or her well-being to individuals who are not trained as physicians? When government mandates cause an excessive demand for healthcare services leading to month-long waiting lists to see physicians, isn’t it just a better idea to see a non-physician for medical needs with little delay?
